The 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) tests in reading, math and (5th grade only) science are coming soon. The purpose of these tests is to assess our jobs as educators in each school in Minnesota while also providing data to you on your child’s progress for Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) grade level standards. I know you, like all of us, are anxious for your child to perform well on these tests. But this is a great time, perhaps the best time, to remember that among the children sitting quietly in their seats, there will be a dancer who will grace a stage and not need to prove his worth with math. There will be an entrepreneur who opens new doors for the world who does not comprehend what she reads the first, second, or third time she reads it. There will be a musician who will inspire others who will not need to be accountable for biology. There will be a coach, a caregiver, an artist, a motivational speaker, and so many more talented children among our community. So, if your child struggles to earn the highest achievements in math and reading, just remember that the state of Minnesota has not yet developed the assessment for their area of giftedness. Together, we will make sure that each and every Highlands child knows their worth, confidence and dignity lie within – not in the scores of exams. Whether she or he scores high or low, we all love them just the same.
